The allotments have been established for a number of years and are very keen to receive volunteer support in respect of development and ongoing maintenance.
There are a number of projects that would benefit from volunteer support: Creating brick cold frames for use as plant storage for the polytunnel on the site. The facility has the required bricks but would like help digging the footings around the proposed area to enable cold frames to be built. Making and installing some raised beds which will require preparing area, putting together and placing where appropriate. There is a rough derelict piece of land that is little used and with some help could be utilised. Volunteers could clear the area cut back vegetation and potentially prepare it for the planting of a small orchard. An existing fruit cage is in poor state of repair and could benefit from repair and new netting. Roots have the netting material required. Volunteers could also support and help with general and ongoing maintenance as mentioned above. Weeding, cutting back, replacing old beds etc.
Breakdown of tasks:
Digging, weeding, preparing, basic woodwork, general gardening activities etc.
Each project could probably use between 10 to 15 volunteers to complete. Please note however that Roots are happy to receive more volunteers up to 50 at any one time if available.
Roots will provide tools, equipment and gloves. They would also welcome some fundraising if possible to provide materials for the site. Volunteers to wear robust outdoor clothing and shoes. Tea/Coffee biscuits provided but volunteers to provide own lunch. There are numerous facilities available locally. Adequate parking available next to the allotment site. Note only portacabin toilet facilities available.
