How can data and technology be applied to improve development/humanitarian outcomes without exacerbating inequalities and cause harm? What are the risks associated with using technology and what are effective mitigation measures?Join us for an invigorating discussion with our panellists from across the world and sector:Anna Scott is a freelance editor and communications consultant, specialising in data ethics, civic tech, and human rights. She works with clients in civic tech and data ethics, and runs communications part-time for 360Giving, a charity that has developed an open data standard for philanthropy in the UK. Anna used to be Head of Content at the Open Data Institute, and before that covered global development at the Guardian. She is also a trainee Gestalt Psychotherapist with an interest in ethical use of data and tech in mental health services.Monica Nthiga: is the Director of Implementation at Ushahidi, a global technology company founded and headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya which builds data platforms to empower people globally to creatively and collaboratively solve problems. A passionate advocate on the role of innovation and technology as catalysts to improve communities stimulate citizen-led initiatives and ensure the creation of new channels and tools for governments to embrace citizen feedback.Alan Jackson: is someone important at Aptivate a UK based NGO that provides IT services for international development. Aptivate believe in the power of knowledge and communication to alleviate poverty, suffering and conflict, and in the right of every individual to inform and be informed. Alan is an expert in the use, risks and benefits of ICTs in the international development sector with key interests in Agile methodologies, Participatory approaches and Consensus decision making. Gurumurthy Kasinathan is Founder and Director of IT for Change, an Indian digital technology NGO pushing the boundaries of existing vocabulary and practice, exploring new development and social change frameworks within education education, gender, governance, and internet/digital policies.Rebecca Telford: Chief of Education Section at UNHCR is an education specialist with 20 years’ experience in supporting children whose lives are affected by crisis and conflict. She has a diverse background working on issues of youth engagement, education in emergencies, and awarded a doctorate from the UK’s Leicester University in 2018 with a thesis that sought to understand the local realities of teaching with technology in Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camp.
