Speaker profiles:

Derek Cummings - Director of HR and Operations, Burness Paull LLP

Derek is the Director of Business Services and a board member at leading commercial law firm Burness Paull. He has overall responsibility for the firm’s non legal functions. Prior to becoming Director of Business Services Derek was the firm’s HR Director. Derek joined Burness Paull from Sportscotland, the national sport development agency, where he was Head of HR. Prior to that he worked for nearly 20 years in financial services, firstly with Scottish Life and latterly with Standard Life. Derek started out studying accountancy and by a twist of fate ended up pursuing a career in HR.

Kathleen Brogan, Managing Director, Mercat Tours

In 2015 Kathleen became Managing Director of award winning Mercat Tours, Mercat Presents and Mercat Tours International leading the team into its record-breaking 30th anniversary year. With a dedicated team, she has established Mercat Tours as market leader in quality, expert-led tours of Scotland’s capital, WWI and WWII battlefields of Europe. Since graduating from the first Destination Leaders Programme in 2015, her input has been sought by local and national strategic bodies including VisitScotland, Scottish Enterprise the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions and Scottish Tourism Alliance.

She is committed to skills development for her team and the future workforce, maintaining the family business ethos and continuing the legacy of ‘giving history a damn good telling’ in providing exceptional, memorable experiences. Kathleen is involved in a variety of city and national tourism organisations including Association of Scottish Visitor attractions Board Member, Scotland’s History Festival Board Member, VisitScotland’s Quality Assurance Committee Member, Scotland’s Heritage Management Committee Member, Royal Mile Business Association Committee Member and Edinburgh Capital Group Committee Member.
