Event Details

'Social problems and Social Issues' is a first year module that looks at the way issues become conceived as 'problems' by the media, government and society at large.

Lectures on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th are being opened up to be attended by offer holders as an opportunity to have a taste of university study in the social sciences area.

The key topics covered by the module are migration, poverty, youth gangs, organised crime, education, poverty, homelessness and unemployment. Using images, video, music and popular TV clips for illustration, this module makes sometimes complex issues accessible to students. It does so without losing sight of the social research that informs us of the broader social concerns that underlies many of these issues (such as racism, inequality and social injustice), concerns that the media and politicians often ignore.
