This focused 4-hour training session equips professionals with the essential knowledge and practical tools to identify and respond to suicidality in the context of domestic abuse. Designed for professionals who may come into contact with individuals experiencing domestic abuse and/or suicidality, the course explores the links between abuse and suicide, highlighting key behaviours, warning signs, and high-risk escalation points across the stages of abuse.

Please note that this course is not suitable for staff whose sole or main role is domestic abuse specialist.

Participants will learn how to engage their clients in a conversation about suicide and domestic abuse, gain some hands-on experience in using the Stay Alive app to collaboratively build suicide safety plans with clients and sign post them to support.

The session also includes guided development of a personal wellbeing action plan to help professionals manage the impact of coming into contact with people with suicidality.

Ideal for frontline and non-frontline staff across district local authorities, Registered Providers, housing and homelessness teams, revenue and benefits services, and strategically placed police leads (e.g. domestic abuse champions, safeguarding reviewers). Suitable for safeguarding leads in health (primary care, acute, community, CAMHS, perinatal, drug and alcohol), as well as professionals in education (Early Years to post-16), sexual and reproductive health, and 0–19 services (e.g. Health Visitors, School Nurses).

Also appropriate for those involved in safeguarding panels, reviews and multi-agency forums, such as DHRs, SARs, CSPRs, SCRs, and MARACs.

By the end of the day, you will be able to:

Describe key behaviours and signs of domestic abuse and its various forms.

Explain the connection between domestic abuse and suicide, providing specific examples.

Outline the key stages of domestic abuse and identify high-risk points for escalation.

Engage empathetically with individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts, and ask directly about suicide using clear, compassionate and non-judgemental language

Use the Stay Alive app to help someone create a suicide safety plan.

Develop a personal wellbeing action plan to manage emotional strain and maintain mental health when working with victims/survivors of domestic abuse and/or those who use harmful behaviours.

This free training is exclusively available to professionals working within Hampshire County Council (this is the county of Hampshire, excluding Portsmouth and Southampton) and Isle of Wight Council areas.
