Event description
Seeking a positive future for Kinloch Castle on the Isle of Rum. Talks by various stakeholders with Q and A

About this event

For years now a new role has been sought for Category A listed Kinloch Castle. All reports have favoured some sort of visitor accommodation. Over the years since 1957 when Rum became a National Nature Reserve, Kinloch Castle has been hotel, hostel, bed and breakfast, self catering, study space for university and school groups, and a wedding venue. It has also provided employment opportunities. Sitting unused now except for a few guided tours each week in summer, it could provide employment and business opportunities, help build the population of Rum and contribute to the economy of the Small Isles and Lochaber.

Arranged by the Kinloch Castle Friends Association (KCFA) this free event, to be chaired by Professor Ewan Macdonald OBE, will explore the possibilities for a way forward and outline KCFA plans. The afternoon will include short talks by Kate Forbes MSP; Lord Thurso of Visit Scotland; Simon Montgomery of Historic Environment Scotland; Cllr Denis Rixson of Highland Council and of the Isle of Rum Community Trust; Hugh Garratt, heritage surveyor; Professor Josephine Pemberton FRS of Edinburgh University; and Toby Fichtner-Irvine of Gallanach Lodge, Isle of Muck; and Stewart Sandison and Chris Donald from NatureScot. It will close with a short Q and A session.
