About this event

BAFTA-nominated, BIFA-winning screenwriter and bestselling novelist, Emma Jane Unsworth, will be joining us to open our Literary Festival weekend.

She will be discussing her new novel Slags which was published in May this year. It’s a story about two sisters on a journey of discovery and was one of Vogue’s ‘Books of the Summer’.

A University of Liverpool alumna, Emma has published four novels and a memoir and has written extensively as a journalist. She wrote an episode of The Buccaneers for Apple TV+ and an episode of Stephen Merchant’s The Outlaws, for which she was nominated for a BAFTA.

She adapted her second novel, Animals, into a film, which premiered at Sundance in 2019 and won the British Independent Film Award for Best Debut Screenwriter for her script.

More recently, Emma wrote an episode of the hit comedy series Austin for the BBC, and ABC is developing several of her shows for television, including the adaptation of Slags. She is currently writing a feature film and a musical, and her fifth novel, Cheats, will be published in early 2027.
