Join us for a beautiful circular walk through one of the most scenic corners of Wiltshire and Somerset. We’ll begin at Alfred’s Tower, a 160-foot folly marking the site where King Alfred is said to have rallied his troops in 878 AD. From here, we’ll wander down through the peaceful Stourhead woods, taking in sweeping views and the changing colours of the trees.

Our route will pass the iconic Stourhead House and Gardens – world-famous for their landscaped grounds, temples, and lake, before continuing along the picturesque Six Wells Bottom, named for the springs that form the source of the River Stour. We’ll then loop back through rolling countryside to return to Alfred’s Tower, where the walk began.

Expect a mix of woodland paths, open fields, and gentle hills – perfect for soaking in the history, landscapes, and beauty of this much-loved National Trust estate.

Getting There

By Car: We will meet at Alfred's Tower Car Park, which is free.

By Public Transport: Unfortunately this walk is only accessible by car, but feel free to utilise the Lift Share WhatsApp group below.

What to Bring

Hiking boots or trainers with good grip
Plenty of snacks and a packed lunch
At least 1 litre of water (more if it's a hot day)
Weather-appropriate clothing

Hi, I’m Alice! I’m a Qualified Mountain Leader and founder of The Adventure Girls Club. I founded this club to create a welcoming space for women to reconnect with nature through adventure and outdoor skills. I love meeting the amazing women who join our events, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see participants leave feeling more connected to nature and to one another.

Safety & Participation

Our hikes are designed to be enjoyable and relaxed – it’s about experiencing nature, not rushing! However, you are responsible for your own health and safety. If you're unsure about your fitness level, consult your doctor or reach out with any concerns.

I am a Qualified Mountain Leader and Level 3 Outdoor First Aid trained, so I’ll be available in case of emergencies.

Toilets

There are a few toilets on this walk, but also be prepared for a ‘wild wee’ if needed – just let someone know and find a private spot.

Consent Form

All participants must complete a consent form before joining the hike. Forms must be submitted by the night before the event. A reminder will be sent two days before.

Dogs

Well-behaved dogs are welcome! However, some stiles may not be dog-friendly, and dogs must be kept on leads near livestock or roads. If bringing a dog, please post in our Dog Chat WhatsApp Group to let others know.

If you can no longer make the walk, please cancel your space via Eventbrite as soon as possible so someone else can take your space.
