Event Details

The 16 days of action against gender-based violence campaign is pleased to host two incredible talks by Loiuse Heren and Sir Geoff Palmer.

Chair: Rachel Vette – Project Lead Officer, Edinburgh and Lothian Regional Equality Council (ELREC)

Louise Heren is a documentary producer/director with a track record in producing history films, as well as a part-time postgraduate researcher at the University of St Andrews where her current doctoral research, entitled ‘An Ugly Epoch: male violence in interwar Scotland’, explores violence cases heard at the High Court of Justiciary.

At 16 Days Edinburgh, Louise will present her research on male-on-female violence in 1920s Scotland examining the indictments of rape, ravish, incest, and lewd indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour.

Sir Geoff Palmer OBE is a Professor Emeritus at the School of Life Sciences at Heriott-Watt University and human rights activist. Palmer has accomplished remarkable things in his life in the UK: he discovered the barley abrasion process, he was the first black professor in Scotland, and he was named among the 100 Best Black Britons during the 2007 Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade in the British Empire. In his talk for the 16 days of action against GBV, he will be speaking about is beloved mother – and the struggles she endured as a single mother from Jamaica trying to make a living for her and her son in the UK.

We are the Edinburgh chapter of the United Nation's annual 16 days of action against gender-based violence (November 25 - December 10). But more than that, this is where women from around the world share their experiences, opinions, talent, and knowledge.

Importantly, not only women's voices will be featured. Also spotlighted are the voices of men and organisations that ally with women in the fight against gender inequality and gender-based violence.

To learn more about and engage with these women and allies, please explore our website at http://16days.org.uk/
