Event description
We are delighted that our 18th Armitage Lecture and Workshop has returned for 2021 on the theme of Decision-based inference.

About this event

Our Armitage Lecturer this year is Professor Gianluca Baio from University College London and he will speaking on:

'Statistical modelling for health technology assessment and the analysis of the value of information'

Abstract: Health technology assessment (HTA) is a crucial aspect of medical research and is applied in several jurisdictions, including the UK, to legislate on whether, once they have been approved for marketing, interventions should be directly funded by the healthcare provider, e.g. through reimbursement schemes. With a slight abuse of terminology (at least to economists' ears) and perhaps through a historical accident, this process is often referred to as "Health Economics" and it is grounded in the applications of the precepts of decision making under uncertainty. In this lecture, I will discuss how HTA is arguably in fact a fundamentally statistical problem and the central role that biostatistical methodology plays in the process. For this reason, statisticians should become increasingly involved in the modelling process feeding directly into HTA decisions. I will then focus on discussing methods that can be used to determine the "value of information" associated with the collection of additional data, before committing to a decision, arguing that they should be much more prevalent, specifically in applications such as those in HTA.

We will also have talks from Nina Deliu, Chris Jackson, Oscar Rueda and Mark Van de Wiel, all members of the MRC Biostatistics Unit.

Please note, the Workshop and Lecture will run as a hybrid event with the option to attend either in-person or virtually. There are a limited number of in-person tickets. When registering, please select either the in-person ticket or the virtual ticket - both are free.
