Primary Engineer Grading Day - Thales, Crawley

Primary Engineer Grading Day - Thales, Crawley

By Primary Engineer

Overview

Help us grade the pupil entries submitted to our 'If you were an engineer, what would you do' competition.

What is the 'If you were an engineer, what would you do' Competition?

Each year tens of thousands of pupils from the ages of 3-19 answer the question “If you were an engineer, what would you do?”. Pupils are tasked with interviewing an engineer, identifying a problem in the world around them and then coming up with a creative solution to that problem. They create an annotated drawing of their idea and write a letter to an engineer persuading them to select their idea as a winner. Every single entry is graded by a professional engineer.

Public Exhibitions and Award Ceremonies are then held all over the UK to celebrate the pupils who have taken part, before our University and Industry partners select a design from each region to turn into a working prototype.

What will happen at the grading day?

We award every pupil with a personalised, graded certificate but to do this, we need your help to grade the entries. We’ll work through the entries and decide who will receive a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction Shortlisted grade.

Please work individually to ensure we grade all the entries we have brought with us and let's share the brilliant (and the bonkers) entries with each other throughout the day!

You can award as many Pass, Merit and Distinctions as you like, but remember to grade the entry based on the idea itself and not the quality of the drawing or letter.

Two pupils per year group per school, must receive a Distinction Shortlisted grade. Distinction Shortlisted entries will move forward to the regions final judging day, where this year’s winners will be decided.

All instructions will be explained on the day by The Primary Engineer team.

This is a great day to collaborate with like-minded people who share the passion to encourage STEM within education… plus it’s great fun!
