Overview

Those working in the talking therapies have been first hand witnesses to the rise of the, now ubiquitous, discourse of neurodiversity.

Diagnostic terms are suddenly at the foreground of the work, and we are often asked to verify or endorse their reality.

So how does a therapist position themselves when an increasing number of clients share the same interpretation for their symptoms?

What makes these voguish diagnoses so alluring to those suffering psychological distress, or simply seeking self-definition?

This will be a talk that approaches diagnosis as identification - a way of seeing oneself - or as master signifier - a term that seems to make sense of who one is. It will look at the way the discourse of neurodiversity is deployed in schools, mental health services and the talking therapy clinic. It will be of use to anyone attempting to navigate this shifting discursive terrain.
