Event description
London experienced huge change in the 1980s, a decade of radical political upheaval and revolutions in technology and working practices.

About this event

The 1980's was the decade that saw the 'Big Bang' and deregulation of the City money markets, the demise of Fleet Street, the abolition of the Greater London Council, the Brixton riots, IRA atrocities, all set in the context of wider national issues such as the sell-off of council houses. the AIDS scare, the advent of 'popular capitalism', a wave of new supermarkets, and post-modern architecture.

Based on his new book, 1980s London, Alec Forshaw will explore how London today has been shaped by many of those changes, and how some of the current post-Covid challenges are similar to those faced forty years ago.

Organiser Bloomsbury Festival

Organiser of 1980s London: Shining a light on the present

Local, global, inspiring - Bloomsbury Festival is a unique event created with over 100 partners in this vibrant cultural quarter.  For ten days in October, the streets, parks, museums, galleries, laboratories and public and private buildings of Bloomsbury will host up to 150 original events which attract audiences from across London and beyond.

A hotbed of creativity and pioneering development, Bloomsbury also has one of the youngest and most diverse residential populations in the country. Bloomsbury Festival acts as a catalyst bringing together the area's artists, scientists and residents to explore arts and ideas through the prism of an annual theme.

Outside the Festival event, the organisation delivers community engagement and arts development projects across the year. These include it’s pioneering project, Festival in a Box, which takes artists into the homes of people living with dementia to provide life enhancing and joyful cultural experiences.

Above all, Bloomsbury Festival aims to be enlivening, engaging, entertaining, and fun!

Bloomsbury Festival is a charity. Find out how you can support us.
