Description

1st UK Symposium on Planetary Health: linking environment, health and societies to safeguard our future

Tuesday 6th June 2017
10.00 – 17.00

Brunel University London
Eastern Gateway Auditorium
Kingston Lane
Uxbridge
UB8 3PH

Complimentary Symposium.

The new trans-disciplinary field of ‘Planetary Health’ is based on the ‘understanding that human health and human civilisation depend on flourishing natural systems and the wise stewardship of those natural systems.1’ In this era of global challenges and accelerating environmental change, planetary health recognizes that the health of humanity depends on ensuring the health and resilience of our planet. How can we achieve this?

The aim of this symposium is to introduce staff, students and guests to this new discipline and network with key players in the field. We have an exciting line up of speakers, including Sir Andrew Haines (FRCGP, FRCP, FFPH, Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from 2001 to 2010) and Professor Howard Frumkin (Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington School Of Public Health). As Chair of the Lancet Commission on Planetary Health, Sir Haines will provide an overview of the field, its vision, opportunities and challenge. Professor Frumkin, a Planetary Health Alliance board member, will discuss the impacts of climate change on human health. Also speaking is Professor Alex Ezeh (Director of the African Population and Health Research Centre in Nairobi), world expert on public health in Africa. These renowned international experts will be joined by Brunel researchers Professor Juliette Legler and Dr Mary Richards, who will present Brunel initiatives on planetary health research and teaching.
