Event description
Darkroom film and printing workshop weekend.

About this event

2 Day Black and White Darkroom Printing Workshop

This two-day film and darkroom workshop will guide you through the process of shooting film, getting it processed, creating a contact sheet and then printing an image which you have shot for you to take home. If you’ve always fancied having a go at shooting film and working in the darkroom but don’t own a film camera I will provide one for you. We’ll take a roll of Ilford film on location in Saltburn by the sea, one of the jewels of the North Yorkshire Coast to get some great shots. Returning back to the studio and darkroom to process the film, produce a contact sheet and create a print of your work to take home.

I have been shooting black and white film now for over 30 years and in 2012 was approached by Ilford Photo to become one of their Analogue Artisan Partners to teach film photography and of course to spread the word about this wonderful medium of photography, so you can rest assured that you are in safe hands. I keep my darkroom workshops to a very small group, a maximum of two people, allowing plenty of one to one time with me.

What you will learn.

Day One

On the first morning, you’ll spend some time getting some great shots in Saltburn by the Sea where I will show you how to assess the correct exposure using a handheld light meter rather than using the camera’s light meter. The consistency of achieving the correct exposure every time is paramount.

Back to the darkroom where you will learn about what chemicals to use and how to mix and use them to process your own film, whilst giving you an overview of the different effects the chemistry, timings and temperatures will have on the finished negative. I’ll show you how to produce a contact sheet, you will go on to create your own from which we can review your images and choose the one you would like to print to take home.

 Day Two.

The second day is all about printing. Having chosen the image you would like to print I’ll take you through the next stage which is choosing the chemistry and paper selection, I’ll show you how to use an enlarger and explain the importance of safelights. Next, I’ll show you how to make test strips and how to use them to assess how you are going to print your final print which will include paper grade choice, correct exposure, dodging and burning and split grade printing.

The workshop is kept very small to a maximum of two people so that throughout the two days you are encouraged you to ask as many questions as possible so that when you leave you have had a richly rewarding experience, filled with enthusiasm and eager to continue your journey is an analogue photographer and darkroom technician.

“The artisan art of analogue black and white photography is a beautiful, engaging process taking you on an addictive path to expressing yourself and creating an individual piece of art.” Keith Moss.

Organiser Keith Moss: Keith Moss Photography

Organiser of 2 Day Black and White Photography Darkroom Workshop

I love photography, I absolutely love it I know it’s a cliche but it’s my passion. Ask me to choose which is my favourite genre of photography and I would say that would be like asking a parent which is their favourite child. So I will say that my favourite genre of photography is the one I’m doing at the time. If I’m doing street photography I’m in the zone and loving that, If im doing landscape photography I’m being fulfilled loving that, if I’m doing portrait photography whether in the street or in the studio… well you get the picture.

I’ve been lucky enough to have been able to do photography as my job as well as my hobby. Over the last 30 years I’ve worked for many companies working nationally and internationally and for many blue-chip companies such as Unilever, Hilton International Hotels, Barker and Stonehouse, Laura Ashley and Mercabarna which is a wholesale market in Barcelona. I’ve learnt a lot, mostly on the job in the early days to be honest. I didn’t study photography at collage or university I studied it on the job, so to speak. Learning on the job made me think differently and quickly having to solve problems there and then which turned out to be a great advantage.Early on in my career I was a bit embarrassed about being self taught as people seemed to judge me on it but when they saw me work and the images I produced they soon changed their opinion. So I’m proud to say that I’m self taught, I’ve made mistakes but learnt from them and in the days before digital that was expensive both in time and in film. I bought my first camera, an Olympus OM10 and I’d spend days and days just going out and about and in the studio practising, experimenting and learning using both colour and black and white film and then when digital arrived learning that too.

I’ve worked with some of the industry’s most prestigious photography brands, Leica UK, Phase One, and I’m very proud to say that I’m also an Ilford Photo Artisan Partner. They asked me back in 2012 to join this very small group of photographers and obviously jumped at the chance. You can find some of my work for sale there at House of Ilford.

Now I enjoy passing on my experience and the tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way. Teesside university, Newcastle College, Northumbria university, South Essex College, York university and Cleveland College of art and design are among a few Universities and colleges where I’ve really enjoyed being a guest lecturer and run photography workshops

I’ve also mentored many professional photographers through Digital City and Redcar and Cleveland Enterprise and from time to time have contributed to several physical and online photography magazines like Professional Photographer, Amateur Photographer, Digital Photographer, and Photography for Beginners.

My main focus for my workshops is that you enjoy them and have fun and go away feeling a more confident with your own photography. I teach in a practical way showing you how to do things rather than in a classroom sort of environment, there’s no technical language or jargon used and I keep my workshops small so that I can give you plenty of one to one time.

So if you fancy having a go at street photography including street portraiture or dabbling in the darkroom, it would be great to see you.

If you’d like to see some of my work take a look at my website, like my page on Facebook, follow me on twitter or subscribe to my youtube channel.
