Event description

Description

How to create sensitive, emotionally available and reflective developmental environments for children

Jukka Mäkelä, Child Psychiatrist, child psychotherapy trainer, Theraplay supervisor/trainer - National Institute for Health and Welfare

Saara Salo, PhD, licenced psychologist and psychotherapist, Theraplay supervisor/trainer, MBT-F supervisor/trainer

Aims: Human beings need human interaction to thrive and develop. This is especially important during the childhood years. Children need sensitive, emotionally available and reflective adults who give ’social food’ for their developing brains and minds. Lessons learned from years of research and clinical practice show that sensitivity, emotional availability and the underlying capability of mentalizing – explicitly understanding and reflecting the child’s intentional states of mind- are crucial for healthy development AND they can be practised and enhanced, both in the homes and educational settings.

Bio-cultural perspective on development gives evidence that good parenting should not be done alone. Shared parenting is a human default – children as well as parents need other adults to enrich the interactional experiences for every child as well as to ease the stress for often too lonely care-giving.

In this 2-day seminar, ideas derived from psychological and biological research as well as practical models of working are presented. We aim to give the participants ideas and practical tools how to think, act and emotionally improve adult-child interaction in everyday life. The presenters have years of clinical experience working with adult-child interaction in child psychiatric as well as educational settings. They have both done empirical research and developed and trained about early childhood development, parenting, and therapeutic work with interaction using different treatment modalities.
