Please read before booking: This course is delivered by Leicester City Council for internal staff and for multi-agency partners and other organisation who support and work with Leicester City children, young people and their families. (if you do not work within Leicester City, but would still like to attend, please contact signsofsafety@leicester.gov.uk to enquire and we may be able to support attendance.)

There may be a nominal charge for private (for profit) organisations inside and outside of Leicester City or other Local Authorities. There would not be any charge for key partner agencies such as LPT, UHL, Leicestershire Police, Domestic Abuse Services etc. If you are unsure, please contact us via the email address for clarification.


This 2-day course is the standard training module for front line Childrens Social Care and Early Help practitioners to support the use of the Signs of Safety approach. It is designed for all practitioners, supervisors and managers working with children where there are concerns about their safety and well-being. Delegates must attend the whole of the 2 days.

The course is targeted to those staff who:

· Work for Leicester City Children’s Services. (This is the first course in the mandatory Signs of Safety training pathway for LCC children’s staff.) or

­ A member of staff who has had some Signs of Safety training before and wishes to have a refresher, to consolidate their learning, or if they have had a break from practice (i.e. returning to practice or returning from parental leave etc.)

­ Work for SEND / education services in Leicester City

­ Other LCC teams and service, ie Adult Mental health practitioners, OT services, transitions teams. i.e. Community Safety, some housing leads etc.

For external staff:

· Roles in partner agencies who regularly refer, contribute to assessments and planning, attend, or contribute to meetings and multi-agency decision making.

· Have a Designated Role for Safeguarding.

· Health visitors, school nurses, CAMH’s practitioners, specific roles in school, ie behaviour, attendance, support roles.

· Who are a children’s lead practitioner in your setting.

· Domestic abuse services, homelessness services, services that advice and support people in relation to drug or alcohol use etc.

· Youth workers.

· Domestic abuse, homelessness, services that advice and support people in relation to drug or alcohol use.

· Staff who work for private foster care agencies, or private residential settings.

This course of the practice methodology and approach that Leicester City uses in its work with children and families and focuses on the use of the Signs of Safety Assessment framework to support relationship-based practice to secure safety, wellbeing, success and stability for the child or young person.


The course will give delegates the opportunity to:

· Apply the practice framework with a focus on assessment, analysis and judgement. .

· Apply analytical thinking and create statements goals and scaling questions which are routinely used in practice.

· Use the principles of strengths based / relationship-based practice throughout.

· Consider other elements of Leicester city’s practice methodology: trauma informed practice, Lundy Model of participation and anti-discriminatory and anti-racist practice.

· Understand the key terms and practice developing best questions to support assessment and analysis.

· Have an overview of the other elements of practice framework that support assessment and planning work.
