2015 UCL Lancet Lecture

The new universal Sustainable Development Goals for 2030: from vision to action

Ms. Amina J. Mohammed

The event will be available to watch via live stream on the evening at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/live/lancet

At the recent United Nations Summit on the post-2015 development agenda, heads of state and government have adopted the new agenda that will orient the global efforts towards poverty eradication and sustainable development in the 21st century.

The new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)  are the result of a worldwide participatory process taking  more than two years that has included the voices of civil society, the business community and academia.

The resulting SDGs are universal, encompassing the social and economic transformations that are essential to end poverty and preserve the planet. They are a set of aspirational goals and targets to be adapted and adopted locally accounting for the reality of different countries and circumstances.

Now the challenge of implementation starts. The new agenda is more than a set of global aspirations. Supporting country systems, setting concrete, achievable and realistic targets and aligning country policies with the global SDGs will be the cornerstone of implementation.

The combination of a global set of aspirational SDGs with realistic target setting at the country level will be the path towards achieving the maximum impact possible for the SDGs, including health, by 2030.
