Event description

Description

The Milne Medal is awarded to an individual engineer for excellence in structural design, both in the overall concept and in the attention to detail in their work, and is named in recognition of the late Bob Milne, who served for many years as the Honorary Secretary of the IABSE British Group.

This year, we are delighted to award the Milne Medal to James O’Callaghan BEng CEng MIStructE MHKIE. James is a structural design engineer and cofounder of international award-winning practice Eckersley O’Callaghan. His work has
continuously challenged and redefined what is considered possible, particularly in contemporary architecture. James is widely acknowledged as an authority in structural glass design through his long-term collaboration with Apple. His talk with be on the topic of Engineering Clarity:

'Clarity of thought and expression is considered the ultimate aspiration for many designers. The realisation of iconic structures often belies not only the complexity of the engineering, but also the commitment of the Engineer. Navigating the interplay between design and making, creativity and knowledge, challenges and responsibility is integral in driving Clarity to its zenith. How should the Engineer embrace and assume a central role in this process and truly contribute to tomorrow’s construction industry?'
