Description

2017 Climbathon - Saturday 9 & Sunday 10 September

Mont Orgeuil Castle
** Friends & Family Fun Day Out **
In association with Jersey Heritage Trust

A 96-YEAR-OLD former teacher, Bob Le Sueur, has challenged Jersey people to sign up for the ‘2017 Mont Orgeuil Climbathon’ and raise £44,000 for re-building a medical & community centre in West Nepal's earthquake zone. Bob Le Sueur is hoping many families, teams and individuals in Jersey will take part in this event, organised by Gurkha Welfare Trust Jersey in association with Jersey Heritage Trust. Our thanks to Jersey Heritage Trust for special access to the Castle and to Jersey Overseas Aid Commission (JOAC), who will double your Registration fee and Sponsorship you raise. All entrants receive a wrist band, badge and certificate for their achievement, plus exclusive Gurkha Trophy Awards will be made to 1) Fastest Racing Team Everest Ascent, 2) Fastest Walking Team Everest Ascent / Individual Ben Nevis Ascent, and 3) Top Sponsorship Fundraiser or Donator. There will also be a special Gurkha Trophy Award made to one Jersey Heritage Trust Member who participates.

Why support this event? Gurkha's defended our freedom and liberty during two World Wars and many other conflicts, fighting alongside British soldiers. Unlike the regular Army Gurkha's don't receive any Army pension and rely on our support. The 2015 earthquake in Nepal devastated their infrastructure and this county remains amongst the poorest in the world. From many West Nepal villages it requires a two-day hike to reach any medical centre, needless to say unfortunately many don't make it back to their homes. This project will bring a medical centre back onto the doorsteps of many Gurkhas and Nepalese villagers.

Challenging these Awesome Peaks will need Teamwork. Individual climbs are welcomed, to achieve what you can. To ensure both capacity and safety factors are maintained individual participants will be limited to 25 Ascents, amounting to 4,500 feet which is height of Ben Nevis. Our objective is to encourage fun and healthy competition. For the exceptionally fit there is an ultimate Team Challenge between 7.00am to 10.00am (when Castle is normally closed), to climb Mount Everest in the quickest time! Two UK Teams, a Gurkha Team and a Gurkha Welfare Trust UK Team, will be participating on Sunday morning starting 7.00am. Supporters and Spectators are welcome to book in advance to watch and cheer them on from the Lower Guard (“Base Camp”). Friends, Family and Individual Walking Ascents are open to everyone between 10.00am and 6.00pm on both days.
