Event Details

The CDTs in Pervasive Parallelism and in Cloud Computing for Big Data proudly bring to you the 2018 Industrial Engagement Event (IEE). Hosted at the University of Edinburgh's Informatics Forum on Tuesday, 10th of April, our engagement events connect PhD students and industry leaders with like interests to discover potential areas of collaboration, particularly via internships and industry projects.

The first part of this 4th annual engagement event will focus on student and industrial presentations, so as to inform both groups on each other’s research areas. This shall be followed by a lunch and poster session, during which industry partners can interact with individual students to further explore their work.

The highly successful networking session is also back for another round of one-on-ones. Student will sign up to visit industry stations in "speed networking" fashion. Industry reps and students will be able to discuss in more detail the opportunities for internships and projects, as outlined in the morning's presentations.

Members of the CDT in PPar’s Industrial Advisory Board will break for a feedback meeting, which all industry representatives are welcome to attend. Industry representatives who prefer to continue discussing opportunities will have the option to remain in the one-to-one networking session.

Industrial Partners’ Participation

*All participating industrial partners will have a station in the network one-to-one session.

Industry representatives are encouraged to bring information and material about their company and current/future opportunities for student-industry collaboration.

*Industrial representatives are also invited to give a short pitch during the Industry Presentations will focus on either internship/project opportunities or the company's reflection on hiring PhD graduates.

Industry partners interested in giving a pitch should indicate this via the registration form. We ask that presentations be limited to 3-4 minutes and about 4-5 slides max.

Slides to be submitted to Karen, CDT Administrator: k.pinto-csaszar@ed.ac.uk

Registration

Industry partners and postgraduate students in the CDT PPar and CCBD programmes will be guaranteed a place at the event.

There may be a limited number of spaces for PhD students from other participating programmes/institutes, particularly for poster submissions, but students can add themselves to the waiting list, as more tickets may become available closer to the event.

*The registration deadline is 1st March 2018. Please register by clicking on the green button above and filling out the registration form. Industry partners can register multiple attendees at once.*

Students

PhD students from various programmes will be in attendance at the 2018 Industrial Engagement Event, studying in the areas of: informatics, computer science, physics, engineering and mathematics. They come from the University of Edinburgh; The University of Newcastle; Heriot Watt University; and Edinburgh Napier University. Many of the students attending the IEE will be looking for internships in the near future, or looking ahead to opportunities post-graduation.

CDT in Pervasive Parallelism and CDT in Cloud Computing for Big Data students will have a guaranteed place in the poster session. Limited spaces will be available for poster submissions from PhD students from other programmes.

Non CDT Students (Associated Students)

NOTE: ALL NON-PPAR/CCBD STUDENTS should register using the "Associated Students" tickets option.

Associated students (i.e. non-PPar or CCBD students) may participate as 1) attendees for the entire event, 2) attendees for the company presentations starting at noon 3) for the networking session. Please indicate what portion of the event you will be attending by selecting the appropriate ticket option upon registration.

We kindly ask associated students who are joining a portion of the day's event to please present themselves only at *designated registration times* in order to avoid disruptions, thank you.

CDT in Pervasive Parallelism and CDT in Cloud Computing for Big Data

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Pervasive Parallelism at the University of Edinburgh seeks to develop the parallel computing research leaders of the future. We offer a 4-year programme, combining a 1-year Master of Science by Research degree and a 3-year PhD. Based at the University's School of Informatics, we are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the School of Informatics and a number of our industrial partners.

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing for Big Data at Newcastle University is an innovative and highly prestigious programme, offering around 11 students per year the opportunity to study for a PhD in an exciting, new area in which there is an acute skills shortage. The programme aims to produce multi-disciplinary experts in the mathematics, statistics and computing science of extracting knowledge from big data, with practical experience in exploiting this knowledge to solve problems across a range of application domains.

This four year programme adopts an interdisciplinary research philosophy that will build upon your previous background, combining professional and technical skills training with industry-focussed research.
