Description

WORD FACTORY PRESENTS:

2018/19 Short Story Course — Workshop 5

Taking Your Feelings For A Walk with Tom Lee: Accessing the Inner Story

This workshop is focussed on helping you tune into your writing and to encourage your inner voice. Tom Lee is an award-winning short story writer, memoirist and novelist. HIs debut novel, The Alarming Palsy of James Orr, was published to critical acclaim last year. He also teaches at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

A short story often evolves, not in a conscious or considered way, but by a more mysterious, intuitive process. Its origins are often in something small or hard to pin down, or in a particular voice, and the key to accessing it is in following that instinct where it might lead - taking a feeling for a walk. As Flannery O'Connor observed, 'I write to find out what I know' - writing as a sense of discovery rather than conscious execution of a plan.

In this this session, Tom Lee will draw on his own writing process, explaining how he has been able to talk his own feelings for a walk through the short story form. There will also be reference to other writers who have inspired him and time for exercises and discussion.

Tom is a Word Factory Apprentice Award mentor and will be reading with his mentee Georgina Aboud later in the day at a celebratory Word Factory salon.

Class size limited to 25 places.
