About this event

This is our 2nd Treasure Hunt after the enormously successful 2017 event. This year we up the stakes with prizes to be won for the winning team.

What to expect?

The event consists of a series of clues, items to collect and even a picture round! Cars will meet in the car park of Preston North End in front of the magnificent Dick, Kerr Ladies memorial (photo opportunity number 1)! Teams will then begin the hunt, staggered to avoid any mishaps. The hunt is geared more towards adults but kids are welcome and could certiainly join in the fun and collecting of items.

The end of the trail will be at Moor Park Sports Club Blackpool Road, Fulwood, Preston PR2 3AE and a hot pot supper will be served around 8:30pm. The cost is just £5 per person (inc eventbrite fees); all profits will go back into the Dick, Kerr Ladies Foundation which is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. The monies will be used in promoting and supporting girls and women’s football initiatives.

About the Dick, Kerr Ladies …

The Dick, Kerr Ladies formed during the First World War by a group of munitions girls at the Dick, Kerr factory on Strand Road in Preston, to raise funds for the care of wounded soldiers at the Moor Park Military Hospital. They played their first game on Christmas Day 1917 at Preston North End (the start of this treasure hunt). They played in front of a crowd of 10,000 spectators. They were an instant success winning the match 4-0 and raised £600 for the wounded soldiers (almost £50k today).

On Boxing Day 1920, a record-breaking crowd of 53,000 packed into Goodison Park, Everton, to see them take on St Helens Ladies. Just a year later in 1921 the FA placed a ban on women’s football that lasted till 1971, defying the ban the Dick, Kerr Ladies continued to play football and raise money for charity until 1965. They played 833, won 759, drew 46 and lost only 28 games, and they raised somewhere in the region of £180,000 for charity (£10 million today). They shone like diamonds through some dreadful times in our history, brought joy and pride to a country ravaged by War. We will never see their like again!

The Dick, Kerr Ladies Foundation

The foundation was set up in 2017 to mark the 100-year anniversary of that first game. A team of volunteers set about marking the 100-years and mark it they did! With the first ever historic blue plaque to mark the achievements of women’s football, a discrimination against women in sport conference, a gala dinner, the first national women’s walking football tournament and to top it all off on the 22nd December 2017 a 6 metre by 4 metre granite plaque was unveiled at Preston North End (you will see this at the start of the event). The Foundation has had a quiet 2018 in comparison but we want to ensure the legacy continues so we will again run the National Women’s Walking Football Tournament on the 8th July at UCLan Sports Arena. In addition we decided to have a little fun by bringing back an event that was first organised in the 1980’s as a fundraiser for Preston Rangers WFC, and also the Lancashire Trophy International Women’s Football Tournament (organised by Gail Newsham). This event is what led to the Dick, Kerr Ladies reuniting for the very first time! Since then Gail has made it her personal mission to ensure that their story would never be forgotten, writing 3 books and appearing on countless TV and radio shows. It so happens that Gail is also pretty good at Treasure Hunts so here we go again….
