Description

2019 Central Scotland Green Network Forum

Making more of what we've got - repurposing unused and underused spaces

6 June 2019 – Hamish Wood Building, Glasgow Caledonian University

This year’s conference is presented in partnership with the Scottish Land Commission to explore the theme of repurposing unused and underused sites.

Over 9,000 hectares of the CSGN area is classified as vacant and derelict; this accounts for 78% of Scotland’s total. It holds huge potential to help make better places that support health and wellbeing, help boost the economy and mitigate against the challenges of climate change. In addition, we also have large areas of land associated with housing, business and transport which have little or no function. By rejuvenating these areas communities stand to benefit from increased engagement and empowerment, tackling social inequalities while increasing local pride and ownership.

As well as a key note ministerial speech, we will hear from Sandra Albro from Holden Forests & Gardens, which is made up of two of Northeast Ohio’s most important environmental and cultural institutions: the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden. Sandra, a research associate in applied urban ecology, will be speaking about how communities are transforming vacant sites into beneficial green infrastructure.

Also making key note speeches are Professor Brian Evans, Head of Urbanism at Glasgow School of Art, and Mathew Frith from London Wildlife Trust. Brian has recently been appointed as Glasgow’s first ever city urbanist, and will be considering how urban and post-industrial spaces can be reimagined. Mathew is the director of conservation with London Wildlife Trust and will be drawing on 35 years of learning from London to explore repurposing public and open spaces.

We look forward to seeing you on 6 June to look at examples of good practice and to explore these ideas further.
