Event Details

This programme, for teaching staff in leadership positions, is across 6 months and includes a leadership weekend retreat and two half-day sessions*.  It is structured around a ‘leadership focus’ which is specific to your role and your setting, and focuses on developing your leadership capability in practice.

You will be part of a community of school leaders through the programme which includes face-to-face sessions, workshops, the weekend retreat, an online community and the opportunity to be part of a dynamic professional education leadership network.


Who is this programme for?

This programme is for teachers that:

  • are in a new leadership position
  • have been in a leadership role for some time and would like the opportunity to reflect on practice and deepen their understanding

What’s involved?

The programme is delivered over five sessions across a 6 month period and includes a weekend leadership retreat (*we can live-stream the half day sessions for particpants further afield; for more details contact info@bsnila.com)

  • Session 1 - Thursday 14th March, 1:30-6.00pm, [Junior School Vlaskamp, the British School in the Netherlands 
  • Sessions 2-4 - 11am Friday 3rd May to 1.30pm on Sunday 5th May [weekend retreat https://www.ruwenberg.nl/en/] 
  • Session 5 -Thursday 20th June, 1.30-6.00pm followed by BBQ [Junior School Vlaskamp, the British School in the Netherlands]

  • Overview of the whole programme – objectives and activities
  • Ways of working - agreements and expectations + light bulb moment idea
  • The leadership focus
  • What does leadership look like?
  • Who are you as a leader?
  • What is my impact on student learning going to be between now and the end of the programme?

Session 2

  • The leadership focus – a review of learning so far
  • How do you lead others?
  • Evening activity

Session 3

  • How do you lead others to impact on student learning?
  • Evening Activity Feedback
  • Observing learning and giving feedback on impact of teaching
  • Keeping your team focused on teaching and learning – tools to use
  • Where are you and your team? What might you use in your next team meeting?
  • Holding honest conversation – to support professional growth
  • Positive self – talk, language of leadership

Session 4

  • How do you lead within the system?
  • Reflections  + thoughts from positive self-talk exercise
  • Developing yourself and others – delegation
  • What is my impact as a leader? Intentional  / unintentional
  • Consider your unintentional impact? The power of asking for feedback
  • Where are you going as a leader – next steps?

Session 5

  • Leadership Focus Review
  • Next steps

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this programme, you'll have:

  • gained an understanding of yourself and others as leaders
  • developed a range of skills necessary for good leadership
  • the skills needed to hold honest, impactful conversations
  • developed your leadership capacity in practice


Programme Cost

€695 (inclusive of 2-night retreat but exclusive of travel).  Multiple booking sicount applied to school booking more than one place.  Multiple booking participant fee is €645 (all particpants must be registered at point of booking).

International Leadership Academy – Programme Faciliatators

Lead Facilitator – Sue Aspinall 

Over the last twenty years, Sue Aspinall has been leading schools through significant change, intent on raising the quality of learning and teaching available to their students. Having been both a Head of an inner London state school and three British International Schools based in different countries, Sue knows how it is to live a global life and transition between cultures and across countries. She has the ability to build diverse teams and motivate staff around common goals. She empowers staff to lead from within and coaches them to reach their highest aspirations. An experienced facilitator, Sue provides an impactful learning experience for leaders who want to make a difference.

Co-Facilitator – Paul Topping

Paul’s was a founding Headteacher at Hadley Learning Community - a new £70 million flagship 3-16 school in Telford in 2005 and was appointed to a second Headship five years later at South Bromsgrove High School -  a large 13-18 school which became an outstanding school under Paul’s leadership in 2012. The school is also largest school-based centre for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the UK, an academy trust and was designated a National Teaching School in 2014. South Bromsgrove was awarded a license by the DfE to deliver NPQs from September 2017. 

Paul was appointed as a National Leader of Education in 2013. A strong advocate of professional learning, he has led on NPQH for many years and until recently was a member of West Midlands Strategic Board for Teaching Schools.  He has been an Ofsted Inspector since 2012 and was Chair of the Worcestershire Association of Secondary Headteachers from 2015-17. Paul is designated by the DfE as a Pupil Premium Reviewer.

In September 2017 Paul took up a new post at Headteacher at the British School in The Netherlands. The organisation comprises three junior schools and a secondary school with students of 88 nationalities. BSN also runs the International Leadership Academy and is the only school in Europe to offer a full British and International curriculum.

Co-Facilitator – Chris Bailey 

Chris has been the Deputy Head Teacher at Junior School Vlaskamp in The Hague for four years, having previously worked in the same role in the UK state sector. Chris is studying for a Masters Degree in Education with The University of Nottingham.  His research has focused on early years and leadership best practice. The challenge of finding ways to innovate, share practice and drive professional engagement in CPD motivates him everyday.  Chris loves running and is always on the look out for his next race! 

 

Programme Lead – Liz Free

Liz Free is the Director of the International Leadership Academy (ILA) at The British School in The Netherlands. Before establishing the ILA, Liz was Head of Professional Development at Oxford University Press and established the largest CPD operation in the UK, delivering CPD domestically and internationally to 13,000 schools and 120,000 teachers annually. Liz is a Fellow of the RSA and a leading voice for developing continuing professional learning and development as a core lever for raising pupil outcomes and wellbeing. Liz is an active tweeter, blogger and author, and is a passionate advocate for education equality. She has held leadership positions as Head of Junior School, Head of Primary and Vice-Principal (ages 3-18) in the UK and USA.
