Description

PLEASE NOTE the online tickets for this event are FULLY BOOKED. Four additional tickets will be available from our 'in person' box office which opens for two days in early September and will be located in Winchester Tourist Information (2nd and 3rd September)

This hugely popular walking tour of the Peninsula Barracks, the five-acre historic site in the centre of the city, returns for 2019. Led by local architect Huw Thomas, Winchester’s award-winning architect, this is a fabulous opportunity to learn more about Huw's instrumental role in preserving the site from demolition. A great example of 'People Power'!

The story, however, is not just about buildings and preservation from the bulldozers. It’s a tale of executions, ghosts, mass graves, bloody 13th century battles and much more besides. It mirrors centuries of British history – the Romans, Alfred the Great, William the Conqueror, Henry III, Simon de Montfort, Henry V, Cromwell, Charles II, James II with Sir Christopher Wren and Florence Nightingale in the mix for good measure.

Then there’s the battle with the MOD and local authorities in Hampshire – the battle Huw Thomas fought and won.

Please note there are different start times for the two days. Refreshments can be purchased at the end of the tour from the cafe located within the Peninsula Barracks. Some of the paths are steep, and on gravel.
