Event description

Description

The UEL Learning and Teaching Symposium is an opportunity to share best practices and innovative approaches to improving the experience of our students in the classroom. Through partnerships across London, we are providing a one-day intensive workshop style symposium for participants to acquire these tools to implement in their university context.

The theme this year is Connected Students and we are pleased to welcome Dr Theo Gilbert and Professor Kevin Hylton as our keynote speakers.

Dr Theo Gilbert (SFHEA) is Associate Professor of Learning and Teaching at the University of Hertfordshire. Dr Gilbert's research includes 'Compassion focused Pedagogy’ (CfP) and he recently won the 2018 Time Higher Education award, Most Innovative Teacher of the Year.

His research interest is in rooting evidence based/theoretically supported attention to compassion into the academic curriculum. More details can be found on his website: https://compassioninhe.wordpress.com/films/

Prof. Kevin Hylton is the Head of the Research Centre for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Leeds Beckett University. His research focuses on the nature and extent of 'race', racism and racialisation in sport, leisure and education.

As the first black Professor in over 75 years of Carnegie history, Prof. Hylton brings a voice to the sociology of sport and leisure that reflects an intricate engagement with, and commitment to challenge, the endemic issues that mark race relations in the UK. His early research focused on race equality in local government and he has completed work for the West Yorkshire Health Authority, Kick it Out, the Department for Culture Media and Sport, Sporting Equals, the Sports Councils, and local authorities. Prof. Hylton has worked for over 20 years with national governing organisations and local authorities on issues of equality and diversity.
