About this Event

New Unity and the Newington Green Meeting House: Revolutionary Ideas project are delighted to welcome historian Tom Holland to deliver this year’s Richard Price Lecture which will focus on the Christian roots of atheism.

Join us at the Newington Green Meeting House or online from 6pm onwards on 12th November 2020.

Tom Holland is an award-winning historian, author and broadcaster. He is the author of Rubicon: The Triumph and the Tragedy of the Roman Republic, which won the Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History and was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize; Persian Fire, his history of the Graeco-Persian wars, won the Anglo-Hellenic League’s Runciman Award in 2006.

The talk will run for 45 minutes or so from 6pm onwards, and will be followed by an opportunity for questions. Drinks will be served. The entire event will be socially distanced.

Welsh born Dissenter Richard Price is one of the most influential Welshmen you may never have heard of. He was one of "the leading minds of the Enlightenment”. Price preached and lived at Newington Green for over 30 years where, as well as being a political radical, he also did pioneering work in maths and statistics whose diverse applications today can be found underpinning everything from life insurance and Google to nuclear physics and climate change models.

During his time in Newington Green, Price wrote and published on many subjects – including political reform, civil liberty, pensions, life assurance, demography, science and theology. A friend to the likes of Mary Wollstonecraft, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Tom Paine, Joseph Priestley and Thomas Jefferson (many of whom visited him at Newington Green) he supported the leaders of the American Revolution and the opening events of the French Revolution.

The Richard Price Memorial Lecture is an annual event and the current series has been running since 2003. We have been excited to welcome a wide range of speakers and topics in the past. Previous speakers have included the author Barbara Taylor, the broadcaster Evan Davis and the journalist Owen Jones. Previous topics have ranged from a call for the disestablishment of the Church of England to the subject of patient choice in healthcare.

The Newington Green Meeting House has recently re-opened following a full renovation thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Newington Green Meeting House is fully accessible. Please contact us if you have access requirements.

Due to the coronavirus (COVID 19), a limited number of live tickets are available. The event will be socially distanced and groups are limited to a maximum of 6 people. Any groups/ couples must be from the same household or support bubble. Virtual tickets are also available at registration (an event link will be emailed to you on the day). Please bring a face covering (as these are mandatory) and follow the guidelines in place throughout the building.
