Event description

Description

We are delighted to be able to invite you to participate in the East of England Children and Young People’s Diabetes Games 2020!

The event is open to all children with a diagnosis of diabetes up to the age of 19.

The games are a brilliant opportunity for young people with diabetes to come together and compete in a fun day full of sporting activities whilst meeting other young people with type 1, as well as being a fun day out for the whole family.

This is the fifth time that we have run the games. Previous events have been a huge success with over 750 children and young people with type 1 having taken part over the last 8 years. We have had very positive feedback, indicating that families find them a great opportunity to come together to celebrate the achievements of their children with type 1 whilst making friends and trying out new sporting experiences.

As you are all aware, times are tight in the NHS at the moment and therefore we have had to take the hard decision to charge an entry fee. However we are trying to keep this as low as possible. Therefore, the cost of entry is £7.50 per athlete which is paid online at the time of registration. For this entry fee all athletes will receive a t-shirt in the colour of their allocated team and a competitor’s medal. Please make sure that you complete the t-shirt size section of the registration form so we can make sure we order them a t-shirt that will fit.

As in previous years the team elements of the day are only open to children with type 1, so please only pay a registration fee and provide a t-shirt size for them. However siblings and other family members are encouraged to participate in all of the family fun elements of the day.

Please make sure that you let us know how many family members / spectators will be attending on the day. There is a section for this on the registration form. The venue needs to know total numbers for health and safety reasons.

Once registered the children will be divided into three teams, based on the geographical area that their hospital is located in. These teams will all have a go at a series of sporting challenges across the course of the day. The team with the most points at the end of the day will be crowned regional champions and will be presented with a champion’s cup. All athletes who take part will receive a competitor’s medal.

As well as competing in the team challenges the athletes will have the opportunity to try out a taster session in a variety of new sports over the course of the day. You will be able to sign up for your taster session on arrival at the games.

The day will close with a series of 100m running races for all age groups. Your child can decide on the day whether or not they would like to participate in these.

We like to make this a day for the whole family so this year there will also be a parent’s race! Please indicate on the registration form whether you are happy to compete in this so we know how many people to anticipate for this.

As this is first and foremost an opportunity for families with type 1 to come together and have fun we will be providing bouncy castles, face painters and children’s entertainers to keep everybody entertained between the sporting events.

There will also be food and refreshments stands providing a range of delicacies from ice cream, to burgers to keep hunger and thirst at bay during the big day. We will work with these stand holders to make sure that carb counting information is available for you on the day.

You are very welcome to bring your own picnic food to the venue with you. You might want to consider bringing camping chairs and picnic blankets to set up your families support station for the day.

The deadline for registering for the games will be Friday 29th May.

Once we have all the applications and have put everyone on a team we will share this with your local diabetes teams.

As Kings Lynn is quite far to travel for a number of units in our region, local diabetes teams are trying to arrange coach transportation to get their team to the venue. If you would struggle to get to the venue under your own steam and would like to travel on your local coach please contact your diabetes team for further information.

There is lots of free parking available at the venue.

If you have any questions about the event please do give me a call on 07977442060 or email me kate.wilson@addenbrookes.nhs.uk

We will be in touch after the 29th May to provide you with information about how to find us on the day, what to bring with you etc.

We will be posting updates on the network Facebook page which can be found by searching ‘Parents Support Network for East of England Paediatric Diabetes’.

If you have any questions please email me: kate.wilson@addenbrookes.nhs.uk

We look forward to seeing you on the 29th July.

Kind regards

Kate Wilson
