Join the Heritage team for a 2-hour guided walk through three diverse Buddhist temples at Bonnyrigg during the Ullambana Festival and this year's History Week!

Explore the rich cultural legacies these temples have contributed to Bonnyrigg, and connect with the vibrant community that surrounds them.

Notes:

Please arrive 10 minutes before the start time for registration confirmation.

We recommend that you wear comfortable, easy to slip on shoes as the walk is over 1.5 hours in duration and you will be required to take off your shoes at each of the temples.

Please wear sunscreen and a hat (for sunny days) or an umbrella and wet weather gear (for rainy days). Bring water and some snacks.

The walk is suitable for adult and families with children, aged 10 years and over. All children under 12 years must be accompanied and supervised by a parent/carer. This walk requires a basic level of fitness, it is conducted on a combination of paths and tracks including some uneven ground, grass surfaces, slopes and steps, so a reasonable level of mobility is required.

Etiquette for visiting religious sites:

1. Greet any robed, ordained Buddhist monks or nuns of any tradition with a half bow from the waist with palms together and a smile. Address all monks and nuns as “Venerable.”

2. Dress modestly and avoid shorts or mini skirts . Shoes and hats should be taken off prior to entering a temple.

3. Do not bring meat or alcohol products onto the temple grounds. Do not consume food or drink in the main hall.

4. Refrain from pointing your feet at Buddha images or in the direction of any person when seated as it is considered impolite.

5. Refrain from stepping over any religious books, people or food on the floor.

6. Buddha images are sacred objects, so do not pose in front of them. Always ask for permission when taking photograph.

7. Refrain from touching any ordained monastics, especially monks from the Theravada tradition.

8. Theravada monks normally eat their main meal before noon.

9. Maintain the serenity within the temple ground by speaking softly.

10. It is respectful to walk in clockwise direction around a Buddhist temple.
