20in20 for the MS Trust: Capital City 12 noon
Thu 25 May 2017, 12:00 – 14:00 BST
The City of London is a leading financial hub and home to some of the biggest banking and insurance institutions in the world.
On this walk we will take a fascinating journey to discover the origins of London’s financial centre – from its humble beginnings in 17th century coffee houses to its ancient and unusual governance and voting system that’s still in use today.
We will learn how the City of London developed into a global financial centre, taking in key buildings such as, the London Stock Exchange, Guildhall, the Bank of England, Lloyds of London and Rothschild’s, before finishing at the ‘Insurance Quarter’, including Willis, the world’s oldest insurance broker who handled cover for the Titanic.
So if you’ve ever wondered why we talk about being able to ‘hear a pin drop’, or if anyone has ever broken into the Bank of England, or indeed what does it actually do, then this is the tour for you.
