Event description

Description

There are 110 livery companies in the City of London, from traditional ‘misteries’ such as the 600 year-old Mercers’ Company to the very modern Worshipful Company of Information Technologists. They still hold an important place in the City of London today: it is they who vote every year for the Lord Mayor.

Many of the companies emerged from the medieval guilds that bought wealth and prosperity to the City. Today, few are involved in their original trades, but some have moved their interests into supporting more specialist areas, such as beekeeping or aromatherapy oils. What links every company, above all, is their strong commitment to charity.

On this walk you’ll see both ancient and modern halls (including one that featured in the recent BBC TV series Taboo); you’ll find out about some of the ancient ceremonies they’re still involved in, from the Ceremony of the Pyx to Swan Upping, and learn about their role in the City today.

The tour will end at Cannon Street Station.

Note: we shall not be going in any of the halls but information can be given about visiting them on future dates.
