Mercers’ Hall – Setting for Dinner
An exclusive tour of the Senior City Livery Company and its Hall as it prepares for one of the year’s major functions – The Associated Companies Dinner. Meet your City Guide Mike Dudgeon, a Past Master of the Mercers' Company, in Guildhall Yard at 11.00am for a short walk to Ironmonger Lane, where Mercers’ Hall stands on the birthplace of St Thomas Becket. Over a welcoming cup of coffee or tea, hear how for more than 500 years Mercers have occupied this site, becoming over time the most powerful of the medieval craft guilds.
Then tour the formal rooms of the Hall: the Ambulatory and Chapel (the only livery company to have one) with its extraordinary medieval statue of Christ; the Court Rooms with their unique carvings and exquisite chandeliers, and hear how today the Company conducts its corporate and philanthropic business; and then the Livery Hall itself, being set out with silver and crystal for a major dinner, and hear how the Company interacts today with the City, other companies and the wider world. Finally, visit the Plate Safe where the Company’s invaluable and ancient treasures are stored, before returning to the workaday world of Cheapside by 1.00pm.
Tour is accessible for wheelchair users, though the Plate Safe may be restricted.
