20in20 for the MS Trust: Smithfield Walk 6.45am
Thu 25 May 2017, 06:45 – 08:30 BST
This remarkable day commences with a second offering of one of the most unusual and popular tours conducted within the City of London, a visit to Smithfield Meat Market during trading hours.
There has been a market in Smithfield for many centuries and the present day Victorian Meat Market is famous throughout the world and is the last surviving food market within the City of London. Our tour begins at Barbican Underground Station and we explore some of the narrow lanes and alleyways on our way to the Market, in order to place it in its historical context. Once inside this remarkable building, we move along the buyers' avenue chatting to the butchers and tradesmen and examining the meat and other products offered for sale.
Because this is a night market, there are frequently bargains to be had at the end of the night's trading and we encourage our guests to bring a strong bag with them for any purchases. We see parts of the market that many visitors will never have noticed and we shall be paying particular attention to that part of the market which is to become the exciting new home for the Museum of London. This 0645 tour will visit the market whilst trading is just to say coming to an end and it's well worth the early start.
We finish the tour in West Smithfield at around 0830 and will be pleased to recommend a nearby market cafe for a welcome hot drink and excellent breakfast.
Because this is a working market, groups of visitors are restricted to 12 in number and people attending must be 16 years old or over. Your guide will be one of a small cohort of City of London Guides who are accredited to guide inside the Market during trading hours and you will recognise them by their badge and white coat.
