Approximate course length:

2 hours per week for 6 weeks

This course is for:

This course is intended for those who want to take control of, and understand, the various controls and settings of their digital camera. We will aim to produce sharp, well exposed and creatively composed pictures and discuss photography as an expressive and creative medium. We will also discuss how the medium of photography can support mental well-being in a creative and collaborative environment.

You will learn:

• The various controls and settings available on most digital cameras.

• When to choose programs such as auto, shutter and aperture priority and manual exposure.

• When to choose auto or manual focus.

• When, and when not, to use flash.

• How you might compose pictures more creatively and use light and weather conditions effectively.

• How to present and discuss pictures that are meaningful, encouraging and supportive to you and others.

This is a classroom based course which will provide an opportunity to develop your photography skills in a friendly, sociable environment.

There are no exams or formal assessments.

There will be chance to ask questions in class and put what you have learned into practice.

We will decide on our own themes and areas of interest.

Your tutor will give you feedback during the sessions and you will be able to self-assess.

Work outside of sessions:

We will discuss and decide on photography to practise and carry out between sessions.

There is an expectation that you will complete work outside of the sessions in your own time. Your tutor will give you guidance.

Additional costs and what to prepare:

You will require the following equipment/resources for this course - your own digital camera.

You will need a pen and paper, laptop or tablet so that you can make your own notes.

Handouts will be provided during the session or emailed to you after the session, if preferred.

This course involves being outside. Please wear comfortable footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather.

Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messy, depending on where we go to photograph.

Progression from this course:

You may wish to progress to another Digital Photography course with more focus, such as Landscape and close up photography.

Course fees explained

Some of our courses are free of charge. Others have a full fee and a lower ‘concessions’ rate for those on certain benefits. This may vary from course to course so please ask when enquiring about a particular course. For many of our learning for leisure courses we use three different fee bands:

Fee B: Derbyshire Gold cards holders

Fee C: Concessions for those on certain benefits/allowances – details are on our How to fund your learning page.

There may be additional costs on some courses for materials please ask for details.

If selecting one of the reduced rates, you will be asked to show proof of entitlement when attending course.

Booking:

A booking fee is charged by Eventbrite for each booking, this is retained by Eventbrite. Derbyshire Adult Community Education Service receive the course fee.
