Event description

Description

If you’re responsible for running a not-for-profit group then this has to be a date in your diary.

Being a trustee or committee member of a charity, voluntary or community group can be a daunting prospect for new and experienced people alike. There’s no magic formula for success, but strong leadership from those in charge is essential.

Our annual conference dedicated to trustees and management committee members gives you the opportunity to share experiences with peers, refresh yourself on your roles and responsibilities and learn from experts on how to make your leadership team as effective as it can be.

This unique event is split into two sessions. Delegates are welcome to attend one or both sessions.

Trustee conference 2.00pm-5.30pm

This conference provides time to focus on the unique challenges facing trustees and management committee members and will provide an afternoon of practical inspiration from local and national governance and trusteeship experts.

As well as insightful and stimulating plenary speakers and interactive breakout sessions this afternoon conference will provide you with the opportunity to share your experiences with peers and extend your network of contacts. You’ll take away essential, practical tips and tools to help your leadership team operate as effectively as you can so your charity is making the most impact.

Who should attend?

Management committee members, board leaders and trustees. Chief executives may also find this of interest.

Price

  • £20 for charities delivering services in Buckinghamshire (£15 per delegate if organisation is attending the trustee matching fair. Contact Jenny on 0300 111 1250 or jenny@communityimpactbucks.org.uk for the discounted price.)

  • £50 for charities not delivering services in Buckinghamshire

  • £50 for statutory bodies

Breakout Sessions:

Addressing the challenge of ineffective board members
Cora Carvey, experienced trustee and retired charity chief executive

Sad to say, not all board members pull their weight, which makes it harder for those that do! So what can you do if you find your charity’s efforts hampered by fellow trustees who are less than effective? Come along to hear some tips, reflect on your challenges and share some ideas as to how to address them.

Does your constitution work for you?
Paul Ridout, partner, IBB Solicitors

“Your constitution is something you write when you set up and then file away.” Is that your experience? Are you still pursuing the same charitable purposes or have you moved on? Do you know how you appoint new trustees and how you make changes to your constitution? What would happen if you wanted to merge with another charity, or if you wanted to pay one of your trustees?

Come along to hear about how to avoid the pitfalls that have caught out other people and how your constitution can be made to work for you. Your charity’s constitution can be the best tool for getting everyone working to the same agenda, and for ensuring that, as trustees, you are fulfilling your responsibilities and keeping out of trouble.

Are younger trustees the answer?
Richard Brooks, vice president (union development), National Union of Students

Only 0.5% of trustees across the charity sector are under the age of 24. Students’ Unions, charities where students are in the majority on the trustee boards, provide an excellent springboard for these young leaders. On paper this model shouldn’t work – high turnover, very ambitious ideas, and limited experience. As the Charity Commission has remarked, however, the governance of students’ unions is often stronger than that of many other charities. In this interactive session, find out why this model works and its benefits, participate in an open discussion about taking on younger trustees, and take away ideas about how to successfully replicate our model to enhance your own charity.

Ten top tips for getting the best from your new trustees
Lynne Gilbert, Lynne Gilbert Consulting

New trustees so often bring with them fresh ideas and a new outlook, but how do you get them involved and contributing from the moment they join you? In this fun and energy-filled session we will cover the ‘Top Ten Rules’ learned from the most effective charities. Find out how you can prepare trustees to join your board, the leadership skills trustees need as well as how to teambuild your board, make decisions for success and much more….

Trustee matching fair 6.00pm-7.30pm

Do you want to become a trustee? Or are you an organisation with trustee vacancies? This informal, but highly effective, networking session will kick off with refreshments and a welcome address followed by plenty of time for charities and individuals to meet, learn more about each other and hopefully develop a long-lasting relationship.

As an organisation, you will be able to put into practice everything you learn from the afternoon conference on how to attract new trustees and, once you’ve registered, we’ll send you tips on how to make the most of the fair to find your perfect match.

If you want to become a trustee this is the perfect event to meet with a variety of charities all under one roof. Whether you’re just putting a toe in the water and want to learn more about what’s involved, or if you’re determined to find the right charity for you, our matching fair can help. Once you’ve registered we’ll ask you for a few more details so we can point you to the most relevant charities on the night.

Who should attend?

Individuals wanting to become trustees and charities who have trustee vacancies they want to fill.

Price

  • Free for potential trustees

  • £30 for charities delivering services in Buckinghamshire (max three representatives)
