25 years with George Orwell

D.J. Taylor in conversation with Rachel Hore

For the last quarter of a century, a large part of D.J. Taylor's professional life has been spent in the company of George Orwell. In that time he has written two biographies of him, Orwell: The Life, which won the 2003 Whitbread Prize for Biography, and Orwell: The New Life (2023), a study of his most famous novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four: The Biography (2019), and Who Is Big Brother? A Reader's Guide to George Orwell (2024). Here Rachel Hore questions him about his relationship with Orwell and the effect it has had on him both as a writer and a person.
