Description

Please register you attenance to the 25th RBGE Annual Conference 2018 Workshops.

Workshop descriptions are below:

Switched on @ Work
Facilitated by: Energy Savings Trust
Lecture theatre
Switched on @Work is designed to increase the knowledge of employees to enable them to make the smarter, more cost-effective and greener choice with regards to workplace travel and beyond. A short presentation is delivered at the workplace followed by an opportunity to view an electric vehicle and bicycle, to help employees become more familiar with the technology.

How to Write a Book
Facilitated by: Publications Team
Boardrooom
At some point in our lives we have probably all dreamed of being the next Stephen King/J.K. Rowlin/Dick Francis/Ian Fleming/Enid Blyton (delete as applicable) but how do you go about realising that dream?

This workshop won’t cover that.

What it will do is introduce you to the RBGE Publications team and tell you about why you should want to get us involved in your projects. One of the roles of the team is to work with all RBGE staff with the aim of encouraging you to write, whether it’s the pages that you’re responsible for on the new website, an article in the Botanics magazine, the next volume in the RBGE Guidebooks series or the definitive scholarly monograph on [insert name of relevant plant here]. Who knows, maybe between us we could actually come up with the next big bestseller …?

Royal Charter – Delivering the Best Visitor Experience
Facilitated by: Visitor Welcome Team
Boardroom annex
The ROYAL Charter seeks to offer guidance to staff across all departments in order to reacquire and ultimately retain our 5 Star Visitor Attraction Status from VisitScotland. The charter has five tenets; Recognition, Ownership, Your Chance to Shine, Anticipation and Loyalty. Imagine yourself both as a visitor and as a member of staff interacting with a visitor, then have your say in how we can deliver each of the tenets to maximise and enhance the visitor experience.

‘Science is Boring’
Facilitated by: Max Coleman
Fletcher building classroom
Most people would not consider themselves to be interested in science. Which is odd when you think that science is simply about understanding how nature works. So how can the Botanics reach this large audience and engage people with science? This workshop will explore ways in which the barriers to engagement can be overcome and highlight opportunities that you can use to engage people with your science.

Vision for Change
Facilitated by: Simon Milne
RK's office
An opportunity for indiviuals to discuss with the Regius Keeper any points arising from the presentation in relation to staff engagement, structures, values and career development.

Helping to Spread the RBGE News through Green Pages
Facilitated by: Sadie Barber
Judy Cromarty's office
Help design the home page for Green Pages on computer start-up each day, with the aim of improving internal communication and information flow.

Floral Formulae : Key to Understanding the Structure of Flowers
Facilitated by: Louis Ronse De Craene
Lecture room 1
This workshop is about replacing elaborate taxonomic descriptions and diagnoses of species with an accurate and shortened formula that can be used for education and identification. This is an ongoing process that is currently being developed in the MSc flower evolution practicals.
