In this PhEminar, we delve deeper into a critical new materialist (Geerts 2021) exploration of the affect-laden more-than-human Memorial 22/3, located in Belgium’s Sonian Forest and constructed to honor the 32 victims that died during the 2016 Brussels terrorist attacks. The project above is framed by a larger research project that pushes for an alternative post-philosophical theorizing of terrorism and counterterrorism as intertwined material-discursive-affective phenomena, and that thinks through the more-than-human materializations of political, violence, memory & memorials, and commemoration practices.
