Description

The theme for the 27th Magill Symposium is 'Pre-assessment at the centre of perioperative care & beyond'.

Two sessions aim to explore this theme and reconcile the contemporary science and clinical care through a series of presentations given by experts in their field, that are not only educational but also thought provoking.

Bringing together an eclectic mix of speakers with a diversity in expertise, the 27th Magill Symposium provides a unique programme in exploring 'Pre-assessment at the centre of perioperative care & beyond'.

The 2019 MAGILL KEYNOTE SPEAKER

It is with great pleasure to announce that the 2019 Magill speaker is Professor Mark Hlatky, from Stanford University, USA.

'The use of routine datasets captured in the healthcare system for identification of patients at risk of perioperative complications- learning from the USA'.


Session 1: Data Science - an integrative approach

  • Professor Stefan Schraag (Golden Jubilee National Hospital)- Patient preoperative web portal for remote, self-completed assessment & triage: a feasibility study.
  • Tara Donnelly (NHS Improvement) - A guide for clinicians and the streamlining hospital. Patient communication: developing high impact patient portals.
  • Hazel Jones (NHS Digital) - The past, present and future of innovation to support and empower the patient.
  • Dr Sophie Coronini-Cronberg (Imperial College London and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital) - Inside out: Improving outcomes for the invisible patient.

Session 2: Clinical Science - The expert’s approach – not forgetting why the patient is having surgery

  • Dr James Day (Oxford University Hospitals) - Pre-habilitation: the use of ECHO and CPEX in risk stratification in the pre-assessment clinic.
  • Dr Caroline Cormack (Chelsea & Westminster Hospital) - The pros and cons of standardisation of pre-assessment clinics.
  • Professor Mike Grocott (University of Southampton) - What if the patient is not for enhance recovery?
  • Dr Helgi Johannsson (Imperial College Healthcare) - Enhanced recovery and its links with pre-assessment.


In keeping with tradition, the Magill symposium is complimented by pre-symposium workshops for delegates to attend prior to the afternoons proceedings.
