Established in 1989 with an endowment from the Spanish Ambassador, the annual Wellington Lecture explores aspects of the life and times of the 1st Duke of Wellington, one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century.

Over the years the University of Southampton has welcomed a host of distinguished speakers to present the lecture. This year we welcome Bernard Cornwell, who has spent half a lifetime writing, in both fiction and non-fiction, about the first Duke of Wellington, and shares a novelist’s apprehensions of the Duke, looking behind the towering fame and the familiar stories to ask what was Arthur Wellesley really like? Or can we ever know?

About Bernard Cornwell:

Bernard Cornwell is the most successful and prolific historical novelist writing today. He is the author of over 50 novels published in 30 countries and in 28 languages and has sold over 20 million books around the world. His non-fiction account of the battle of Waterloo was a number one bestseller and received rave reviews:

Bernard was born in London, raised in Essex and worked for the BBC for eleven years before meeting Judy, his American wife. Denied an American work permit he wrote a novel instead and has been writing ever since. He and Judy divide their time between Cape Cod and Charleston, South Carolina.

On behalf of the Special Collections Division, and in honour of the 28th Wellington Lecture, we will also be hosting an open afternoon allowing visitors to view some of the Wellington Archive and to meet the curators.
