2nd ANNUAL- ADVANCING SICKLE CELL NUTRITION (ASCN) CONFERENCE.

The NHS has a clear mandate about improving the Quality of Life (QOL) of people living with long term conditions including Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD), promoting prevention, improving the patients experience of healthcare, with high priority given to reducing health inequalities for all patient groups. SCD is a marginalised genetically inherited red blood cell disorder associated with high levels of morbidity, mortality, disability and poor Quality of Life (QOL) outcomes and is considered a global public health problem according to the World Health Organisation (WHO, 2006) and United Nations (UN, 2008).

Presently, nutrition in SCD is a neglected part of standard care provision confounded by a lack of tailored nutritional knowledge, resources and nutrition service provision available to sickle cell patients, negatively impacting on their experience, access and outcomes of nutrition. There are clear links between the clinical features of sickle cell and nutrition evident in the growth delays, nutrient deficiencies and increased malnutrition risks in this patient population, requiring nutrition service provision.

Sickle cell nutrition is an emerging specialism in the profession of Dietetics a significant advancement towards addressing the nutritional care gaps in Sickle Cell Disorder. This in person conference invites you to enhance your knowledge on the nutritional management of sickle cell patients whilst also exploring key challenges and opportunities. Moreover, this conference focuses on the benefits of the role of nutrition as a management option in SCD, necessary to help mitigate some of the debilitating symptoms related to the clinical features and management of the condition.

This in person conference, aims to achieve the following:

1. Provide an overview of the rationale for the nutritional management of sickle cell patients based on existing scientific literature and research perspectives.

2. Provide clinical, psychological, dietetic, and midwifery perspectives from practitioners on the need for the nutritional management of SCD addressing key challenges and gaps to improve patient outcomes.

3. Provide insights on the vital role nutrition can play in supporting the efficacy of the medical management modalities in SCD such as blood transfusions and the management of iron overloading.

4. Share key insights on how the Sickle Cell Nutrition Eatwell Guide is being used to close the nutrition knowledge and dietetic care gaps in SCD.

5. Consider key strategies to support the integration of nutrition and dietetic care into sickle cell patient pathways.
