REPEAT EVENT

Due to the high demand, we are running a repeat of the April Mandolin Day. There's more mandolin players out there than we thought :)

Time Signatures and the Mandolin

Following on from the resounding success of his first ever Mandolin Day in February last year, leading UK mandolinist Mike Giverin will be running his second ever ‘Mandolin Day’ on Saturday April 14th. Since picking up the mandolin aged 14, Mike has developed into one of the leading exponents of the instrument working on the British roots & acoustic music scene today. He has gathered a wealth of knowledge about the instrument over the years and is delighted to be running another day of mandolin workshops. This year, the day will be an exploration of different time signatures and the different mandolin techniques required to master each one. The day will be ideal for intermediate and competent beginners who would like to explore how the mandolin is played depending on the time signature and genre of music. However there will be plenty of challenging material for more advanced players and complete beginners are welcome, but would need to bring their own instrument and have at least attempted to try a few things out on the mandolin before coming along (many good introductory lessons are available on youtube).

The day will be split into four separate 1 hour 15 minutes workshops. In the morning, the more commonly used 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures will be explored along with various techniques specific to them. In the afternoon, some more complex time signatures will be looked at, starting in 6/8 and progressing into the strange world of 7/8. Mike is a very experienced teacher and every workshop will be constructed so that all attendees, of any standard, will learn useful techniques and tips that they may not have learnt previously or may have tried but struggled with in the past.

A lunch of sandwiches and snacks is included in the ticket price and tea/coffee/soft drinks will be available throughout the day. Players of other mandolin-family instruments (bouzouki, mandola etc) are more than welcome, although some of the techniques discussed throughout the day may not transfer (chord shapes etc).

For anyone using public transport, the Mouldsworth train station is the closest one to Manley Village Hall, and there will be pick-up and drop-offs available on the day to and from the station.
