Event Details

The first tour booked up within a day, so we have listed another one, but PLEASE NOTE this event clashes with 'The Artist and the Changing City' :

Location: The building is located between Viet Moon restaurant and Mitchell   & Butlers offices at the top of the hill. It is a one-way street down   Fleet Street from Summer Row.

Tour lasts roughly an hour.

With just 2 months left of a 12 month building conservation project, our contractors Fairhurst Ward Abbotts will lead you around Birmingham Conservation Trust's Grade II* listed factory in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter. The Newman Bros. Coffin Works was purpose built in 1894 and made coffin fittings of the highest quality until it closed in 1999. This tour will focus on the conservation and repair work FWA have been doing to bring this building back into use as a heritage attraction which will also incorporate commercial units, but you'll get to hear about some of the social history of the factory, as well as the manufacturing processes that went on. The building is due to re-open in September 2014.

Safety is very important. At this time the Coffin Works will be a building site. Hard Hats and high vis jackets provided . Please wear sensible shoes (no open toes or stilettos). It is dusty, so best not wear your Sunday best! During the repair phase access is not suitable for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility. Steep stairs and uneven surfaces.

Birmingham Architecture Festival 2014

BAF2014 will be hosted for the second year this May with a series of events designed to inspire the public, creative communities, construction professionals and architects alike to engage with the city in fun, inventive and thought-provoking ways. No matter how long we have been inhabitants of a certain place, there is always something new to discover. The city of Birmingham is a vibrant, dynamic and ever-changing place and the festival aims to celebrate the quirks that make up this wonderful melting pot. BAF2014 will host a range of events such as guided tours, exhibitions, talks, film screenings and workshops, all with the aim of celebrating the city, its architecture, its spaces and its inhabitants.

Many of the festival's events are available to book through eventbrite, but others are bookable through the organisations we are collaborating with, so please check the website for our full programme:
