Event description

Description

The conference will take place on 8th November 2019 in the Berrick Saul Building, the University of York.

The event will be an encounter between scholars from Latin America and Europe. It aims to expose and discuss our contradictions as researchers from different epistemic paradigms and backgrounds, and to bring together researchers in the UK who are studying the Latin American subcontinent. We propose the topic of a resignification of this never-ending conquestas a way of approaching the ongoing cultural hegemony and cultural struggles in the region, in conversation with a wide range of disciplines within the arts and humanities.

This project finds inspiration in the story of a Fuegian kidnapped by English explorers in the nineteenth century, brought to Britain to learn the ways of the English and rebaptized as ‘York Minster’, ‘Jemmy Button’ and ‘Fuegia Basket’. As South Americans studying and living in Europe, we find in this story a metaphor for our own contradictions.

The conference will feature with a keynote speaker, several panels covering a variety of disciplines within the humanities, and the performance of a piece composed by Carlos Zamora homaging the memory of the Fuegian 'York Minster'.
