Derwendeg Primary School is in the village of Cefn Hengoed which is a designated Communities first area in the Caerphilly local authority. The school currently has 210 pupils on roll from the ages of three to eleven. There are six single-age classes and one mixed-age class plus a part-time nursery. The average number of pupils eligible for free school meals is around 32%, which is above the national average of 20%.
The school benefits from a nature area where there is a pond, a bird hide, a bottle greenhouse and four vegetable beds. The area is in need of maintenance as it has not been used for some time and the new Headteacher wishes for it to be reinstated and enjoyed by the pupils. The school would like the vegetable beds to be turned over and weeded. The soil may benefit from topping up with grow bags or compost. The wooden edging could also be treated with preserver. The bottle greenhouse has fallen into disrepair and requires some TLC. The roof is currently open as it is constructed from plastic bottles and covered in polythene which has now perished. The building would benefit from installing a polycarbonate roof, treating the timber frame and possibly replacing the bottle windows with polycarbonate to weatherproof the building.
Inside the greenhouse needs clearing out and may benefit from a potting table and some mesh structures to grow pot plants on. During our visit we were not able to see the floor clearly as such it may require laying with patio slabs. Volunteers could help to maintain the pond area. The overgrowth onto the walkway over the pond could be cut back and anti-slip chicken wire stapled down. To stop pupils climbing over the fence surrounding the pond the school would like to install a picket type fence around the existing fence. It could then be painted/treated so that it matches in colour. For the final task volunteers could reinstate a bird hide which has been locked up for quite some time. The hide may require some clearing out and treating.
The school has a small budget, but the volunteers might need to provide some materials to complete all of the tasks.
