3MT & MSC's 3 6 9 Programme
PURPOSE: To generate new writing that is different, out-of-the-box as they say, fictional, informative, entertaining, autobiographical and biographical. Any genre. That's your choice (pornography not accepted). 3MT and Manchester Shakespeare Company had no political persuasion.
We do not judge. Our interest is in entertaining, informative and formative new writing. Any genre. Your audience will determine if your work is 'quality'. Don't be put off by that. Many self-doubting writers have gone on to do wonderful things.
What we look for: We abide by a diversification policy. In particular, we look for a good balance of characters who present society as it is today, in the past or in the future.
When: Generally 3 times a year. Dependent on how many scripts come our way.
Why: To generate new writers and support actors and newly MSC trained actors who live in Greater Manchester but lack the confidence to go forward to auditions and writing competitions.
How: This is the first stage. 3, 6, 9 minute playlets were first introduced by 3MT in 2011, they generate new and short ideas. At stage 1 we believe in what the audience would like to experience and we encourage constructive, safe feedback from them to support the writer with ideas to move their play forward to the second stage.
2nd stage: 30, 33, 35 or thereabouts. Take the ideas the audience have given you in your feedback at stage 1 and generate your piece for stage 2. At stage 2 we request written or video feedback from the audience and the actors. There’s a BUT here. Funding will need to be available or raised to support stage 2 and stage 3.
3rd stage: Your play which should be ready now for the wider world and approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour long, premieres at 3MT. Again, funding will be required to support this stage. Again, written feedback is requested this time but it is simpler at this stage. Take that away and with reviews, yes, reviewers are invited at this stage, and use them to sell your show.
We have piloted this programme since we opened in 2011 and more thoroughly the back end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014. It works well but without the funding, it’s difficult for all the people who have worked very hard on the play to put the time in without financial support.

3MT has an eclectic and full programme throughout the year and apologise for not being able to apply for funding for individual projects. PANDA (performing arts network development agency) and the Arts Council are very helpful if you need advice on applying for funding for arts projects. You can find them easily online. Links below.
