This user led resource centre based in Canton, Cardiff, focuses on providing support for adults with a mental health illness. Service users receive support in a friendly and empathetic environment. Facilities include a Large activity / meeting room, counselling room, kitchen and dining area.
The service offers discrete classes as part of the move on process. Courses in jewellery, Rambling Group, Keep fit and Music/ Drama. The service is increasingly working with young people with mental health needs and would like to make the base more welcoming for them.
The centre would like employee volunteer to decorate some rooms within the building. The rooms are well used by voluntary organisations and self-help groups from morning through to evening 6 days per week and would benefit from redecoration.
The priority is for volunteers to decorate the centre's activity room. The walls would benefit from painting – the centre may wish to change the colour scheme and request a feature wall but would first need to consult the groups who use the room. If it were possible the centre would like a new carpet fitted but if this is not possible the existing carpet could be cleaned with carpet cleaner.
There are also some carpet tiles by the front entrance which require replacing or deep cleaning.
Adjacent to the meeting room is a kitchen area. The staff and service users would like the kitchen painted and if possible new doors for the kitchen units. Painting the doors may also be an option.
If volunteers have a budget the centre would like to purchase a smaller table for in the kitchen as the current table restricts access to wheelchair users.
If volunteers have sufficient numbers, the centre would also like their outside space improved
A picnic table could be installed in the side courtyard area. Additionally, the existing wooden planter is in need of weeding, treating and planting. The wooden boards at the rear of the courtyard require painting and could possibly have a design on them. Volunteers may also wish to make over the front of the building by painting and planting.
Volunteers do not have to commit to completing all the above listed tasks, depending on the number of volunteers, their skills and budget, the project can be divided up.
• The centre has a very limited budget for materials but would be willing to fundraise
• Volunteers will require a budget or willingness to undertake some fundraising for materials to complete all of the tasks
• Employee volunteers could work alongside the centres regular volunteers who were themselves originally beneficiaries of its provision
