Description

Increasing access to science education through DIY equipment

The increasing costs of scientific equipment and stretched resources in schools can lead to inequalities in education, biasing scientific experience and success toward well-funded schools.

Andre Maia Chagas, a Mozilla fellow hosted at the Baden lab in the University of Sussex is improving accessibility to science by developing open-access material that enables schools to build their own resources using 3D printing, at a fraction of the cost of purchasing the equipment.

Teachers and STEM Ambassadors are invited to join us for an evening to explore the opportunities of 3D printing and DIY lab equipment for schools, test some of the equipment (including microscopes, centrifuges, pipettes and neuronal models) and provide feedback on what resources would be most useful to you.

To help prepare for the event, when registering you will be asked the following optional questions:

1. During the development of science practicals for the school curriculum, were there any experiments that had to be left aside due to lack of appropriate equipment and/or consumables? If so, would you mind sharing a more details?

2. Are there tools necessary for practicals that are currently broken or outdated? If so, which ones?

3. What are the main challenges for schools in terms of accessibility to scientific equipment?
