Event description

Description

For the last two years, Mike Giverin (aka www.mandomike.com) has run two highly successful ‘Mandolin Day’ events in the village of Manley, just outside of Chester. This year, we will be building on this success with the ‘3rd Annual Mandolin Day with Mike Giverin’, on Saturday 6th April.

Since picking up the mandolin aged 14, Mike has developed into one of the leading exponents of the instrument working on the British roots & acoustic music scene today. He has gathered a wealth of knowledge about the instrument over the years and is delighted to be running another day of mandolin workshops.

The day will be split into four workshops of about 1 hour 15 minutes, they will all be run on the technique & tune structure. Each workshop will start with a discussion of a particular technique/topic and then we’ll put it into practice around a specific tune. This is the current plan for the 4 four workshops:

Morning 1: Double Stops on the mandolin

Morning 2: Fiddle Tune chords and accompaniment

Afternoon 1: Playing the mandolin in a group/session

Afternoon 2: Attendees requests & recap.

The final workshop ‘Attendees requests’ is something that has come up over the last two years. Lots of small but vital questions have been asked at the workshops and we’d like to devote a bit of time for any attendee to ask anything about the mandolin that they’d like to work on. We will be in touch with each attendee in advance and you will have the opportunity then to request anything you’d like in the final workshop. No topic or question too small or big to cover!

Mike is a very experienced teacher and every workshop will be constructed so that all attendees, of any standard, will learn useful techniques and tips that they may not have learnt previously or may have tried but struggled with in the past. The day will be ideal for intermediate (and competent beginners) who would like to improve their mandolin skills. More advanced players are very welcome, there will still be plenty of material and techniques to look through, but please be aware this is aimed at the intermediate standard of player. Music (and/or tab) will be sent out in advance so less confident players will have time to look at the tunes ... but you will not be expected to learn anything in advance..... This is a day of enjoyment playing the mandolin, no one will be under pressure to play anything :-)

A lunch of sandwiches and snacks is included in the ticket price and tea/coffee/soft drinks will be available throughout the day. Players of other mandolin-family instruments (bouzouki, mandola etc) are more than welcome, although some of the techniques discussed throughout the day may not transfer (chord shapes etc).

For anyone using public transport, the Mouldsworth train station is the closest one to Manley Village Hall, and there will be pick-up and drop-offs available on the day to and from the station.

If you have any questions about the day, please drop an email to: mike@mandomike.com

FAQs

Arggghhh I'm busy that day! Are you doing any more of these?

Possibly yes. If you can't make it this time, I will run a repeat of the day on May 11th so drop me an email at mike@mandomike.com if you would be interested in that date. If there are 10 or more people interested in another day, I'll run it.

What standard is this for?

This day is aimed at the intermediate mandolin player to help them carry on improving their skills. Beginners are more than welcome, but some of the material will not be relevant to where they are at the moment. Advanced plays are also welcome, but there will be times where there will be material that they already know. Mike is a very experienced workshop leader and will always present material for the more advanced players to be working on whilst teaching the main bulk of the group.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There is parking behind the village hall. If you are coming via train, please get the train to Mouldsworth train station and we will pick you up before the event & drop you back off after the event.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

Contact me at mike@mandomike.com

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Nope, just your good selves.
